Curriculum & Rotations

Our Family Medicine Residency Program provides leading edge, evidence-based education and training in a supportive learning community.

Overview

John Muir Health Family Medicine curriculum is designed to impart the tools that cultivate a passion for care of the vulnerable, and the proficiency, inquisitiveness and leadership skills necessary to excel in any practice setting.

We believe in “Clinic First” – placing greatest importance on strong training in the outpatient setting. From the very beginning of residency, residents have the opportunity to build their patient panels within the Family Medicine Practice. Our Clinic First approach allows residents to maintain continuity and build strong relationships with their patients from the very first month. Residents are available in the office to care for their patients on a regular basis.

In addition to putting the Clinic First, we believe it’s vital for future family physicians to have strong training across the Practice PLUS. The PLUS of our training includes clinical, didactic, workshop, projects and other training across this important areas included in the 2020 Future Physicians Job description:

P is for Partnerships and Teamwork to build relationships from care teams to our broader communities.

L is for Leadership & Advocacy—assuring we strengthen our communities through engaged leadership.

U is for YOU, our people and our patients are our most precious resource, your well-being matters.

S is for Scholarly Improvement—disseminating our innovations and our improvements.

Our patient population is a mix of low income, non-English speaking patients, and commercially insured patients.

  • During most outpatient rotations residents are in clinic 4 mornings or afternoons per week.
  • While on most inpatient rotations residents participate in the Family Medicine Practice one morning per week.
